His Holiness Late Bhikshu Dr Lakshmanananda Swamiji (1886-1951)

The Late Swamiji was born on 8/5/1886 in a noble family of our community in Soorlu village, Kasaragod taluk of erstwhile Canara district. After completing his medical education at Madras, he got appointed as a Government doctor in Burma. Soon he got disillusioned with Government service, resigned the job and returned to motherland.

He embraced Sanyas in 1914 and toured the breadth and length of the country as a spiritual seeker. The country's freedom struggle of the time beckoned the deeply patriotic Swami and he trained freedom fighters under the influence of Lokmanya Tilak. To ameliorate the lot of the downtrodden, he set up many Ashrams. He lived for some time in Ramakrishna Ashram, Kashi serving the poor. He offered care to the sickly and leprosy patients, and also worked for the uplift of untouchables and encouraged widow remarriage.

Late Gurudeva Parama Poojya Bhikshu Lakshmananandaji authored well known literary works like 'GeetaShatashloka' , a treatise on Bhagavadgeeta, 'Swaanubhooti' , memoirs of his life, a deeply analytical book in English on Varnashrama ( i.e.caste system ) and also a book on home remedies ( "Thyself Thy Doctor Home Remedies" ). He was the founder of Saraswati Sangha, Madras and Saraswati Printing Press associated with the Sangha publishing a monthly 'Saraswati' in Kannada and Tamil, and another journal by name 'Dharmaraja'.

It was his practice to live his life by raising daily alms, leading the life of a true ascetic.

Despite his larger concerns and activities, he did not forget the community and the near and dear ones amongst whom he was born and raised. Realizing the need for a formal institution to nurture community spirit and a sense of service, as early as in 1933 he founded the D.K. District Ramakshatriya Sangha with the co-operation of late Attavar Shivarama and other elders of the community.

The Swamiji attained confluence with the Divine on 20/6/1951.
